It is Not Contemporary. It is Modern Design. - Concept Me

It is Not Contemporary. It is Modern Design.

November 27th, 2021 / 2 min read

In the subjective world of design, its distinctive arrays, spatial settings and color palettes can leave a wide space for confusion as to what style is which. One of the biggest misconceptions that we, at Concept Me, have had to routinely rectify for a lot of clients pertains to the misuse of the word Contemporary when Modern is what is aimed for. Just because they’re synonyms, they do not come with the same definition. We’re picky like that - designer sensitivities if you may…

Let’s set the record straight then. Modern design is defined by the following -

A selection of woody and earth-toned elements

Inventive selections of metallic, glass and rocky material

Minimalistic spatial distribution devoid of clutter and prone to open spaces

Clean cut lines with a focus on sleek outlooks

A shy approach to adornments and unnecessary accoutrements

Simple, pattern-free furniture that is highly functional

Monochrome color palettes with a focus on grey, beige and earthy hues

Juxtaposed accent colors in select pieces

A sentimental meaning to the small details

While Modern design and Contemporary do share several themes including the minimalist aesthetics, the clean-cut approach and that spacious sleekness, they are not identical. The objective etymology stems from the period around the early twentieth century when the Modern art movement was at its peak. This movement, along with the rise of the Scandinavian and German Bauhus styles, informed this ‘Modern’ design approach. Thus, the name can be misleading, but it’s just a name that branches out into characteristics of design.

So, why go for a Modern interior? As designers, Concept Me’s members are lovers of balancing different movements and drawing inspiration from several design themes and principles. We take these different themes and amalgamate them to come up with a new vista that is not a reinvention but a rejuvenation of different design concepts. And across it all, we have come to recognize that the Modern elements give a sense of naturalism to the space, a sense of sleek order, a breathing ability, an aesthetic congruence and a spatial sharpness that very few movements can achieve without clutter.

If that is what you’re looking for, watch Concept Me’s Chief Vision Officer elaborate on Modern design here or get in contact us - we’ll give your space one of our amalgamations!
