The origin of design trends and styles is always interesting in how it develops over time and borrows from its precedents. When it comes to a design style that is inspired by its physical environment however, the result is a beautifully ethnic interior style. That’s the case with Mediterranean design.
Inspired by warm environments, carefree summers, chic history and life by the coast, Mediterranean design originated from the countries bordering its eponymous sea. Think Santorini, Capri, Morocco. Think linen curtains, arched windows and white stucco! With Mediterranean interiors, you are automatically transported to a white pebbly beach with a bright drink in your hand!
So, how do you achieve that wishful thought?
First, keep in mind some rules.
Mediterranean spaces are usually reflective of light and invite it into the interiors. That is why opting for a neutral palette ranging from shades of white to cream gives the space the opportunity to breathe and allows for warm shades to stand out in the rooms. Go for white washed floors and go for stucco walls as well, giving them that aged textured look native to Greek villas!
Natural materials are integral for a Mediterranean look. At its core, the Mediterranean style is defined by its invitation of the outdoors to the interior. You can do that by bringing in ceramic pots and terracotta vases filled with natural plants and flowers. Lay out a patterned or plain jute rug to give an outdoorsy vibe to the place. Wood flooring is also a great idea for that warm, breezy atmosphere. But don’t be limited by that - go for patterned blue and vermillion tiles to really give the space some soul!
And for the finishes, avoid anything looking over-polished. Natural finished, stone, exposed wood and textured sculptures will all work cohesively in capturing that Capri feel!
And finally, keep in mind that this is a place to truly lounge in. The Mediterranean philosophy of the dolce far niente must be present in the space’s story. So, bring on a big dining table, some comfortable wicker armchairs, deep statement sofas and opt for an open plan! This is a place for generous hospitality and the art of enjoying oneself in peace.
So, that’s that on Mediterranean design. Open the windows a little, let the breeze sway those linen curtains and if you do it right, you can just hear the sound of the Mediterranean waves right next to you!
